Background of the Study
Teamwork is a fundamental element in healthcare delivery, particularly in emergency settings where rapid decision-making and coordinated care are essential for optimal patient outcomes. In emergency care, nurses often work alongside a range of professionals, including physicians, paramedics, and other healthcare providers, to manage acute medical conditions and trauma cases. Effective teamwork can significantly improve patient outcomes by ensuring that care is delivered efficiently, reducing errors, and enhancing patient satisfaction (Oluwaseun et al., 2024).
In Kaduna State, where healthcare facilities face challenges such as understaffing, limited resources, and increasing patient loads, the ability of emergency nurses to work collaboratively has the potential to improve the quality of patient care. Studies have shown that teamwork in healthcare settings promotes communication, boosts morale, reduces stress, and improves clinical outcomes (Musa et al., 2023). However, the specific impact of teamwork among emergency nurses on the quality of care in Kaduna State remains under-researched. This study aims to investigate how teamwork among emergency nurses influences the quality of care provided to patients in the state.
Statement of the Problem
While teamwork is a recognized factor in improving patient care, many healthcare settings in Kaduna State struggle with coordination and communication among healthcare professionals, especially in emergency departments. Factors such as overcrowded emergency rooms, inadequate staffing, and lack of sufficient training can hinder teamwork, ultimately impacting the quality of care. Despite the importance of teamwork, there is limited empirical evidence on its role in enhancing the quality of patient care specifically in emergency nursing practice within Kaduna State.
This gap in knowledge calls for an investigation into how teamwork among emergency nurses contributes to the delivery of quality care and identifies the factors that facilitate or hinder effective collaboration.
